Kutani Tea Bowls (Set of 2)

$66.00

Vintage Kutani porcelain tea bowls in iron-red and gold on white, each with a distinct motif — one painted with trailing peonies and vines, the other with a figural scene of a sage beneath a pine tree with children at play. Both have a small side handle and a pouring spout, and differ slightly in size. Sold as a set of 2. Excellent condition.

Kutani ware is a style of hand-painted Japanese porcelain that originated in the Kutani region of Kaga, Japan, more than 350 years ago. Renowned for its vibrant colors, intricate brushwork, and expressive designs, each piece reflects a rich tradition of Japanese craftsmanship.

This piece is decorated in the Akae (赤絵), or "red painting," style—one of Kutani ware's most celebrated techniques. Characterized by delicate iron-red enamels accented with gold, Akae designs are created through thousands of meticulous brushstrokes rather than broad fields of color. The result is an exceptionally detailed composition that showcases the artistry and precision of the painter.
