Akae Kutani Sake Cups (Set of 4)

Vintage Kutani sake cups in two complementary styles with intricate illustrations: three in rust vermillion and two in pale crackle-glaze.  All are in great condition, except for one cup (rooster) that is chipped as depicted in closeup photos.

Kutani ware is a style of hand-painted Japanese porcelain that originated in the Kutani region of Kaga, Japan, more than 350 years ago. Renowned for its vibrant colors, intricate brushwork, and expressive designs, each piece reflects a rich tradition of Japanese craftsmanship.

This piece is decorated in the Akae (赤絵), or "red painting," style—one of Kutani ware's most celebrated techniques. Characterized by delicate iron-red enamels accented with gold, Akae designs are created through thousands of meticulous brushstrokes rather than broad fields of color. The result is an exceptionally detailed composition that showcases the artistry and precision of the painter.
